Tuesdays With Edwin: A Back-to-Back Win for Miss Philippines in the Miss Earth 2015 Crown
By Edwin Uy
Last December 5, 2015, Angelia Ong, our representative to the Miss Earth 2015 made a back-to-back victory by winning the crown, as last year’s winner was also won by a Filipina, Miss Jaimie Herrel. Everybody thought that it was almost impossible for Angelia to win the title as it is difficult to make a back-to-back win in almost any international pageants. We know that she was one of the early favorites in the preliminaries and would make it only as one of the top 4 but her superb statement in the Q and A made her the top choice of the judges to bag the title.
In the question and answer portion, she was asked to come up with a slogan for the next 15 years of Miss Earth. Angelia replied “We will, because we can.” “I want to let everybody know that all things are possible and all things are feasible if we work together. We will, because we can.” Her answer made the crowd wild and impressed the judges enough to make her win.
This year’s Miss Earth was held in Vienna, Austria and was participated by 86 candidates from all over the world. This was the first time that the Miss Earth pageant was held outside the Philippines and Asia. Her runners-up were: Australia – Dayana Grageda(Miss Earth Air), USA – Britanny Ann Payne(Miss Earth Water) and Brazil – Thiessa Sickert (Miss Earth Fire). Judges during the finals night were mostly Europeans which I believed was impressed with Angelia’s Pinay beauty and wit. That is why I can clearly say that Angelia won fair and square.
Angelia is one of my favorite girls from the Kagandahan Flores Camp and also one of those really close to me. I have always liked her and believed that she has what it takes to be a top beauty queen. She joined Binibining Pilipinas in 2011 but was not able to make it. But I have seen her potential that time. We became close and she would come to my shop to ask help to dress her up in some of her functions. I offered my help as I really find her attitude to be very nice. In the Miss Earth-Philippines 2015, I was one of her official designers and dressed her up in the long gown and the regional costume competitions. She has really worked hard to achieve her dream but more than that, I believe that it is her good karma that made her win. A true beauty both in the inside and the outside, no doubt she deserves to be the new Miss Earth 2015.
