Definitely, in the world of beauty pageants where every young Filipina aspires to make a difference, she’s leaving a legacy behind.

Got an email from a gracious lady who gave the country the first Miss World (Megan Young in 2013), and our second 1st Princess (Gwendoline Ruais in 2011, her first to produce the said franchise), last night to share a huge decision she felt must be of utmost importance. After six fruitful years, Ms. Cory Quirino is now  ready to seal the achievements she brought to the nation to pursue a goal probably bigger than the world that her heart can offer. She is now relinquishing the franchise of Miss World-Philippines (MWP).

I’ve known Ms. Cory for fifteen years, since my days with Woman Today magazine. And I know how hard she worked just to help young girls from all walks of life, of diverse economic and academic backgrounds, achieve their dreams to become a beauty queen.  I must know because I was there when her vision was unfolding as the country producer of MWP. All she said to me was…“Let’s give all the girls equal opportunity to become a beauty queen.” And that was the main reason why we went to different cities all over the country just to provide every young Filipina that opportunity.

And when I got a message from her early last night regarding that decision, it definitely broke my heart. But who am I to question her decision? Her main reason was both personal and business.  She said that too many priorities demanding her time and attention.  I know deep in her heart it was hard, but what is important she left behind a good track record and a prestigious name that is synonymous to what it means to be a “Beauty with a purpose.” She will announce within the week who will be the lucky lady to be the next franchise holder of MWP. To your next endeavor, I wish you good luck!

Below is the email I received from her office and we will print it as it is….

Through her efforts, the name  Miss World, then unfamiliar to the populace  is now permanently etched in the consciousness of the Filipino people.

Ms. Quirino intends to focus on major projects held in abeyance when she joined the beauty pageant industry. She will resume the pursuit of her biggest passion- that of promoting health and wellness on a national scale through her various media platforms.           On the business front,  plans are underway for the global launch of her own brand of all-Filipino wellness and beauty products.

” To Mrs. Julia Morley, I extend my sincerest gratitude. I only have respect and admiration for the Miss World Organization. Inspired by Beauty With a Purpose, we are happy to leave behind a legacy – Miss World’s very own Beauty With a Purpose pediatric cancer ward at the Philippine General Hospital. Having served as license holder of Miss World Philippines for six years has been both memorable and fulfilling.”
