“I know deep inside me that I don’t have the artista look, but when I joined “Mr. Pogi” my only desire was to earn a few bucks for my family.”

Edgar Allan Guzman may have won the “Mr. Pogi” title of Eat Bulaga in 2006 when he was only 16, but he will be the first to admit that he is not really that good-looking. said the Kapamilya actor who appears in the afternoon serye Doble Kara.

Never in his wildest dreams did EA imagine that winning the “Mr. Pogi” title will lead to a career in showbiz. All he wanted to then was to earn few pesos. After his dad died, Edgar felt the need to help his family even if he was the youngest member among the siblings.

T6Dou_zq“I felt it was a stroke of luck that I won. We didn’t have money then and just wanted some pambaon for my siblings. It never crossed my mind that winning in “Mr. Pogi” would open doors for me in showbiz and  it will be my career. But when Eat Bulaga called me to a regular in the show, I thought that was the start. It was my way to earn money for my family,” said the former winner.

Edgar stayed in Eat Bulaga for one and a half years until the top-rating noontime show decided to reformat, sending Edgar and other mainstays jobless. He decided to go back to school while doing some TV commercials on the side. After that he became idle for another year. “It was a tough time for me but I just persevered,” said the actor.

He did some shows for GMA 7 and then transferred to TV 5 and did several TV dramas, with one co-starring with Superstar Nora Aunor. He also did the indie film Ligo na You, Lapit na Me for which he won Best Actor at the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and the Golden Screen Awards Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Comedy or Musical, in a tie with Martin Escudero. He also did the stage play Bona for PETA where he pitted acting chops with Eugene Domingo.

He considers a privileged to be given the chance to work in ABS-CBN where he did several episodes of Maalaala Mo Kaya and the soap opera Hawak Kamay where he did a guest role. He also appeared in Oh My G. Now he is playing one of the male leads in Doble Kara with Julia Montes in a dual role.

But it was his stint in the reality show Your Face Sounds Familiar where Edgar’s star really shone the brightest. “It was a big opportunity for me when it was offered to me. When I knew that I was transferring to ABS-CBN after my contract with TV 5 expired, my wish was to do a teleserye to showcase my acting talent. But then Sir Noel (Ferrer, his manager) told me it would be nice to appear in YFSF since I can show my mettle as a performer. I may not have an excellent voice but I know I can carry a tune. I know my capability when it comes to dancing. So it was a good chance to prove my worth as a performer,” he recalled.

Fuelled by his YFSF stint, Edgar vowed to focus on his career. Aside from Doble Kara, he just finished a movie with JM De Guzman for Skylight Films, a division of Star Cinema. He was also cast opposite Michael Pangilinan in the indie film Pare, Mahal Mo Raw Ako directed by Joven Tan, who wrote the hit song from which the movie was based. He also started work in a new film for Star Cinema that co-stars him with Alex Gonzaga under the direction of Enrico Santos.

“I’ve seen the movie Pare Mahal, Mo Raw Ako and I really liked the story. It’s a light comedy but towards the end when all conflicts had been revealed, magiging madrama. What makes the movie even more special is that Mama Guy (Nora Aunor) is playing my mom. But there are touches of comedy pa rin,” he said.

He had been doing mostly gay roles? Isn’t he afraid to be typecast? “Parang nata-typecast na nga yata ako,” Edgar said with a laugh. “But the gay roles that I have been portraying are not the loud type. Tago naman ang pagka-gay kaya namin tinatanggap,” he said. He also did the same role in MMK where he garnered an acting nomination from the Golden Screen TV Awards.

Since he did various gay roles already, we dared asked EA some questions related to gays.

What is his take in same sex relationship and marriage? “It’s fine with me. Okay lang sa akin. Everyone deserves to be happy,” replied the young actor, who has a gay elder brother. “I don’t have a problem with same sex relationship or marriage.”

Although he claimed that he hasn’t experienced being courted by a gay, he admitted that he will not fall for someone gay.

“In the movie, I was the closet gay who fell for my friend (played by Michael Pangilinan), but in real life that is unlikely to happen. But I don’t have problem with gays kasi they are talented people and they make us happy. They are fun to be with,” he ended.
