Engelbert Humperdinck to wow Filipinos for the nth time
By Evo Joel Contrivida
His first hit single was “Release Me,” which was included in the Guinness Book of Records for achieving 56 consecutive weeks on the charts. It was No. 1 in 11 countries. And since then he is touring the world to sell-out crowds.
WITH more than five decades in the industry, the undisputed King of Romance will keep serenading all the hopeless romantic music lovers all over the world. For the millennials whose parents enjoyed his music, his numerous hits include “Please Release Me,” “Love Me with All of Your Heart,” “Quando, Quando,” “Spanish Eyes,” “The Last Waltz,” “Am I That Easy to Forget,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” and so many more, that only a Superstar Engelbert Humperdinck can do with no interruptions.
And for the nth time, he will be back here in Manila for a solo concert on July 10 at the Araneta Coliseum. In connection with this, we had a chance to do a phone interview with this legend recently and he really sounded excited for his return. We asked him what new things will Filipino audience expect in this concer. He told us that it is part of his world tour and he make sure that there will be a lot of new things to happen, but of course he didn’t go into details.
“I change my show every year, this is tried and tested all over the world so the audience will enjoy.” Humperdinck said with a youthful voice.
He is also aware that Philippines is a country with good singers, so he told me that whenever he had the time, he watched it online. It’s just that he cannot accommodate Filipino singers in his shows to do duets, or probably do a front act for him.
“Filipinos are great singers, but my show has a format, it was numbered somehow so I cannot just decide to have them in my show like that,” he explained.
He also informed me that Filipino audience is his number one supporter, not only in the Philippines, even abroad, whenever he does his world tour.
“I cannot believe, my biggest audiences are Filipinos, even in my US shows, every time I greet them in many language and I say Mabuhay, the cheers are great from Filipinos.”
After the Manila concert, Engelbert will travel to Bangkok and then to Singapore for another concert. He told me that during this time it is a hectic one. He hoped that he could go back and do some vacation because he is aware that our country has many beautiful beaches in the country.
After his series of concerts, Humperdinck said that a new album is in the works now, and definitely all brand new songs. This will be his 50 years anniversary offering in showbiz, due to be released by 2017. He is also open to do some collaborations with new singers like half-Filipino Bruno Mars and British Diva Adele.
Engelbert started his music career as early as 11 years old playing the saxophone. He was a music student. His real name is Arnold George Dorsey, originally from England. His screen name was suggested by his manager, and was taken from an Austrian composer who wrote Hansel and Gretel. He generated sales in excess of 140 million records, including 64 gold albums and 35 platinum, four Grammy nominations, a Golden Globe, and stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Las Vegas Walk of Fame, and Leicester Walk of Fame.
As a world icon, Engelbert is best remembered in the music scene along with The Beatles and the Rolling Stones. He is a close friend of Elvis Presley, and the two legends often performed each other’s songs.
