Gabby Eigenmann Wins Best Actor…Again!
By Ricky L. Calderon
“I don’t do acting projects to win awards. That is bad mindset. Whenever I accept an acting assignment, foremost in my mind is to do my job well. I just do my best. If I get praised for my work, I get an award for it, thank you. If not, thank you pa rin. What is important is that I did my best.”
Kapuso actor Gabby Eigenmann won the Famas best supporting actor for the indie film Asintado, directed by Louie Ignacio. It was an entry at the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival last year.
It was his first award for an indie film. “It felt good winning an award for the first ever indie film that I did,” said Gabby at the press con of IMPACT Creative Organization for Development & Empowerment (IMPACT CODE) which is spearheading the nationwide ANAK OFW Film Fest.
Gabby’s second indie film titled A Better Life is entered at the ANAK OFW Film Fest, and this time, he won again as Best Actor during last night’s awarding ceremony held at SM Megamall Cinema 12.
“Acting is my passion. I want to stay long in the business that’s why I am very passionate about what I do,” said the Kapuso actor.
Gabby, who is more identified as a TV actor, would like to thank Direk Louie who entrusted to him the role in the movie Asintado. “He was the one who paved the way for me to do an indie film tapos Cinemalaya pa so it was really a pleasant experience on my part,” said the actor.
He has had several offers to do indie films but can’t accept them because of his busy schedule. He also to forego doing two movies this year – The Prenup and The Haunted Mansion – because he can’t fix his schedule to accommodate it.
But Gabby is thankful that he has been busy doing TV shows on GMA 7, his home network. He did Pare Koy and Insta Dad at the same time. Then he was added to the cast of Beautiful Strangers. When this show was about to end, he was offered the indie film A Better Life for the Anak OFW Film Fest which he accepted.
“I support the advocacy of OFWs. Ang hirap na mawalay ka sa pamilya. They say ang mga OFWs ang mga bagong bayani. Sila talaga actually, yes. But the thing is, bakit pag kumikita ang Pilipinas masaya lahat pero kapag may problema sila, ang hirap. Sana maging patas sila. They are working their ass off. Hindi sila magtratrabaho abroad if they have work here. They are seeking greener pastures pero ang nasa-sacrifice ay ang family nila at ang personal life nila,” Gabby enthused.
He will be one of the ninong of Letizia, the firstborn of Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera. He said the couple is just waiting for a schedule so that they could formally present Letizia to their friends. “She looks like an angel,” said Gabby of Letizia. “I am happy for them. Hindi ko napigilan ang sarili ko when I saw Letizia’s picture. I tweeted it kaagad. Ang gandang baby.”
Would he like to have a baby again? “Actually, Dingdong and I talked about even before Marian got pregnant. Sabi niya sabay daw kaming magka-baby. I have four kids already. Our youngest is 13. I have two kids who are now in college, one is in high school and another in elementary. I said that if ever we plan to have another baby, I want a girl naman. Pero ang hirap ng buhay. How many shows do I have to do in one year so I could raise five kids?,” said Gabby with a laugh.
How would you assess 2015 in terms of career achievements? “It was a big year,” he replied. “I was surprised, thankful and very grateful kasi hindi ako pinabayaan ng GMA. When I finished Dading, the only question in my mind was what would be my follow-up project? Of course, the people are also curious as to what show I will do next. I was offered to do Once Upon a Kiss but I was pulled out there when I was offered to do Pare Koy, which was one of the longest primetime shows that I did. I was kontrabida there. Then I also did Insta Dad. I am happy because GMA Network always gives me good projects. I am looking forward to what GMA will give me next year,” he said.
“It was a tough year for me, too. When I did Dading, it was hard for me to play a gay character tapos my dad passed away. Sabi ko yung award na nakuha for that was very timely for me to honor my dad. It was the only soap that my dad gave me the thumbs up sign before he died. He said I was good in my role. It was one soap that I could have elevated with him because it was so successful. It was my first ever title role. Lahat naman ng ginagawa kong project, not for anything else, I always do my best para ma-appreciate ng daddy ko para makita lang niya na I was doing okay. Because I’ve been in this business for almost 20 years na. My dad’s dream for me is not to make it big and I was able to fulfill it. But I also feel pressured because for sure the people will be on the lookout what I will do next.”
