Is Barbie Forteza In Love?
By Ricky L. Calderon
“Nakakakilig na ganoon kapogi ang leading man mo. I know, I know. I love my job. Walang sawa factor. I can work with him all day, whole night, every day.”
One of the luckiest artists of GMA 7, Barbie Forteza was beaming with pride and happiness as she faced the members of the press during the press conference of her newest soap, That’s My Amboy, with Andre Paras. As we all know, her last show, The Half Sisters, just ended a few weeks ago after almost two years in the boob tube.
But even before the said soap ended, management presented to her this new show. And what made it so wonderful, from a top-rating afternoon drama, they are now occupying a primetime slot. And it premiered last Monday.
“I am very grateful to GMA for the belief and support that they are giving me. Alam ko maraming artista na ang nagsasabi nito pero ako naman naiintindihan ko na may tiwala talaga sa akin ang GMA dahil right after The Half Sisters, binigyan uli agad ako ng soap. Nakaka-pressure pero more on gratitude itong nararamdaman ko dahil sa ibinibigay nila sa akin, na naniniwala talaga sila akin. It is another blessing and an inspiration to work hard,” she said at the presscon of her new show.
She is reunited with Andre Paras who is also her leading man in her last show. How would she describe him compared to the first time they worked together for two years?
“Acting-wise, he has always been good pero now the difference is he’s more confident. Parang mas confident siya to act and to learn more. Ang dami niyang gustong matutunan. He has endless questions about acting. Sobrang fascinated siya when it comes to acting,” said Barbie.
What else did you discover about him?
“He doesn’t drink coffee,” she replied. “Sabi ko, why? Parang ayaw niya ng lasa, sabi niya. Oh My Gosh! You were not kidding. Hindi siya nagbibiro. Totoo iyon pero bukod doon, mas nakilala ko yung Andre na hindi basta kalog. Ewan ko pero baka masyado ko lang siyang pinagmamasdan. Kahit hindi niya sinasabi sa akin, his eyes are telling me something else. Na parang mayroon siyang deeper character, mayroon siyang deeper personality underneath all that kalog and kakengkoyan. May serious side siya.”
Last year, Barbie received a Gawad Urian best supporting actress nomination for her work in the indie film Mariquina. How does she feel when she gets noticed for her acting, especially from a credible award-giving body?
“Hindi ako napi-pressure sa nomination but more na parang di ako makapaniwala. Kailangan ko laging i-sink in sa sarili ko na mabuti bago ko, na ano ba ang ginagawa ko? Ganoon ba talaga? Deserved ko ba talaga ito? Minsan kinukuwestiyon ko ang sarili ko. Baka naman may nakapansin lang sa akin o baka wala lang silang ibang napanood na film yung ganoon,” she said with a laugh.
“Kasama ba talaga ako sa nominees. Oh My Gosh! Para sa akin, lahat sila inspirasyon ko to do my best. Lahat sila motivation to do a good work.”
In whatever she does, Barbie gives her everything. “I am really very energetic. Hindi ko naman siguro nasasapawan ang co-stars ko pero OA talaga ako energy-wise pero yung acting ko, if I see my co-stars are so good, I really have to give 500% effort. I have to match the effort given by my co-stars. Sobrang galing nilang lahat. It’s fun to work with them.”
What is it in That’s My Amboy that the viewers should watch for?
“This is my first rom-com show. I was kind of afraid of being typecast already since I am always doing drama. People might think I am only good in shedding tears and making people cry. Or make myself look pitiful. Here, I will be showing my true self, the real me, what I am like off camera. That’s what makes this show special.”
You and Andre have worked as a love team. Have you reached the point that you might to level it up and be more than just workmates, or be more than friends?
“Well, medyo nasa point na ako na may crush na ako sa kanya. I don’t think he feels the same,” she laughed. “Hindi ko alam kung bakit. Siguro dahil since he’s Andre, baka mataas ang standard niya for a girl. Ewan ko. Siguro naman kami, bilang love team, hindi kami napi-pressure to work on a relationship more than a love team. Pero aminado naman kami na pareho kaming kinikilig sa mga eksena namin. Siguro dahil maganda ang script and the team, lahat, ayon.
“Walang umay-umay ito. Kayo ba mauumay?,” she shot back. So we said no.
“O, di ba? Exactly!,” was Barbie’s quick reply.
