Micha Oteyza: Like Mother, Like Daughter
By Maryo Labad
“I really want to be an actress, that’s my ultimate goal. And I will do everything to prove to everyone that I mean it.”
In this industry of make-believe, seldom can you get a chance to interview a beautiful daughter and an aspiring actress, doubly supported by an equally beautiful young mother (good enough to be her sister), who just turned movie producer. Their mother-daughter tandem is unparalleled in the biz.
Micha Oteyza, 19, born and raised in New York, is half-Filipino-half Turkish, and the only daughter of Olive Oteyza, an entrepreneur who owns a construction business (Oteyza Builders), and was once a model and a Bb. Pilipinas candidate when she was only 16. The younger Oteyza came home when she was fourteen to continue her college education in the country, and to pursue her desire to be an actress. But she visits New York once a year.
In her desire to fulfill her showbiz dream, Micha took the Star Magic acting workshop under the tutelage of the talented director, Rahyan Q. Carlos. And for the past years, she’s been attending it consistently. She’s now at Level 2. And slowly, her hard work paid off. She has appeared in some ABS-CBN shows.
But this time, she will be introduced in the movie Ringgo, The Dog-Shooter, one of the six (6) official entries in the New Cinema section of the 3rd World Premieres Film Festival (WPFF) 2016, organized by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP). It is written by the country’s most-awarded screenwriter, Ricky Lee, and directed by Rahyan Carlos. And it is initially produced by Olivia Films Productions, owned by Micha’s mom, Ms. Olive.
“Definitely my mom didn’t produce this film just because I want to act,” said the newbie performer. It is one of her passions to be into film production. And when the script was given to her and read it, she definitely loved the story. It just so happened I am her daughter who loves acting so much. In fact when our director told me that I have a love scene here with Ringgo (played by Sandino Martin of the award-winning movie Esprit de Corps), I just had to do it as required in the story.”
Just like her mom, Micha is also a model and a beauty queen. She was crowned Miss UST in 2014. And someday, she hopes to win a national beauty pageant and be able to represent the country in the international contest. For the meantime, she’s pursuing a course in Business Management (UST). And at the same time, she would continue her acting workshop to continuously improve her acting craft. And any time soon, she will be doing her next film since Olivia Films is now in the pre-production of their second project.
Ringgo, the Dog-Shooter will have a premiere on July 1 at the SM North Edsa Cinema 6, and will run until July 9. Other members of the cast in the movie are Janice de Belen, Sandino Martin, Liza Diñ0, I’nca (the Dobberman), Bodgie Pascua, Bembol Roco, Manuel Chua, Jr., Rubi Rubi, and Ms. Olive Oteyza.
