Prince of Ballad Gerald Santos Conquers Theater
By Patricia Simone Dauz
The 2006 grand champion of Pinoy Pop Superstar Gerald Santos is not just a singer, he is now a musical theater actor. Redlife Entertainment Production Inc.’s (REPi) is staging its maiden production “San Pedro Calungsod the Musical” (SPC), where the young balladeer is the lead actor. So far, he has done quite a number of shows at the SM Skydome, Music Museum, and in Digos, Davao Del Sur. His latest album is “Kahit Anong Mangyari.”
REPi is an offshoot of RED family’s existing business. In 1996, they started as a manufacturing and marketing business supplying school materials in Catholic schools. Because of this, the production will be toured in Mindanao, from September 23 to 26, in Davao and Cotabato. Hopefully, the can bring it to other key cities nationwide.
Aside from Gerald Santos, the musical co-stars Kuya Manzano as Padre Diego. This Filipino-Spanish nephew of Edu Manzano performed in Repertory Philippines’ productions and has appeared in films, both in the Philippines and abroad. His last Filipino film was Heneral Luna.
Playing Santos’ mom is the talented May Bayot, a veteran thespian whose recent musical productions were under Tanghalang Pilipino. One of her most memorable roles in theater was Elsa, the protagonist of Himala. The antagonists are played by Carlos Sia (Hurao) and Hutch Perales (Matapang), both are new faces, in the independent film and theater scenes.
A real standout in the play is Prince Jemuel Luciano, who has a special role as the scheming Choco. He has solid nuances and he connects well with other actors, in any given scene he’s in. This was based on the recent performance we watched at the DLSU-Dasmariñas Campus, last Tuesday.
The musical is based on the life story of our second saint, Pedro Calungsod canonized in 2012. The show is directed by Rommel Ramilo. For ticket information, you can contact Peggy Rico (production manager) at 09998830972.
