The Journey of A Beauty Queen : Pia Wurtzbach, MU 2015
By Edwin Uy
Yesterday, a historic event in the pageant world happened in the most prestigious beauty pageant of all time, the Miss Universe. Our representative, Miss Pia Wurtzbach, won the Miss Universe crown after 42 years the country has not won the title. What was controversial was the wrong announcement of the winner as it was Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, that was initially announced as the winner. After 2 minutes, the host, Steve Harvey, went back to the center stage announcing that there was a mistake. He also announced that the 1st runner-up is really Miss Colombia and the true winner of the Miss Universe crown is really Miss Phiippines.
For a few seconds, this made a confusion among Miss Colombia (who was already wearing the crown) and Miss Philippines, until the host explained again that it was his mistake. He even showed the resultwhere it shows that Miss Philippines was the real winner of the Miss Universe 2015 pageant.
Paulina Vega, the reigning Miss Universe. also from Colombia. approached both of them, got the crown from Miss Colombia and gave it to Miss Philippines instead. Pia showed mixed emotions as she was happy to have won the title for her country, but she knew that her fellow candidate felt so bad about her humiliation. You can see in her face how much she wanted to console her, but can’t do anything about it. Even Pia was also deprived of her crowning moment and walk due to what happened. The mistake that Steve did affected both parties. He apologized again to both individual parties of the mistake he has committed. He knew what he did would create controversies among the followers of the contests.
Pia is the 3rd Miss Universe from our country, after Gloria Diaz (1969) and Margie Moran (1973), won the title way back then. The past years, our country has been in the top 10 but never won the crown. Venus Raj, Shamcey Supsup, Janine Togonon, Ariella Arida and MJ Lastimosa where our candidates before Pia Wurtzback, and they all made it to the top 10. Another interesting thing to know was that her national costume and evening gown was created by a Filipino designer, Mr. Albert Andrada. As promised by the chairwoman of Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Mrs. Stella Marquez Araneta was true to her words that this year’s delegates would be dressed up by Filipino designers. I believe that Pia was elegant in her evening gown which added to her success to win the crown. Her performance that night was also superb specially in the question and answer portion.
Another thing that I like about Pia is her very humble attitude. Pia used to be an ABS-CBN star from the talent center and I used to dress her up before in her adolescent years together with Angelene Aguilar and Bea Alonzo. They used to part of K2BU, a show from ABS-CBN way back in 2002. This year, we saw each other during the welcoming party of Parul Shah and it was so humble of her to approach me asking if I still remember her. I replied yes as I remember, that I’ve been dressing them up for their evening gown requirements in their special events. I was even trying to take a selfie picture of myself that time holding the trophy of the Best National Costume Award from Miss Grand International, I was surprised that she approached me and offered her help to take my picture.
Pia is a perfect example of someone with extreme perseverance and determination. She joined Binibining Pilipinas 3 times before she got the title. Last year, she did not even place in the rosters of winner. This year, she performed so well which made her win the crown in the local pageant. Her consistent good performance paved way for her to win the title of Miss Universe, the most prestigious pageant in the world. Her excellent answer in the question and answer was undeniably the reason why she won the crown. Congratulations Pia!!! You made our country and all of us Filipinos proud.
