“Do I sing in the shower? “Yes. I do, mostly OPM songs or Bee Gees, like ‘How Deep is Your Love.”

In this intimate interview with Xian Lim, two songs repeatedly playing inside this writer’s head. The first was a Basil Valdez pop classic (“You”), “It’s your smile,  your face your lips that  I miss,” and, “Can this be love I’m feeling right now….,” the plea of longing by Jeffrey Hidalgo (“Can This Be Love”), by Smokey Mountain.

Lim’s major concert, aptly billed A Date With Xian would happen this July 9 at the KIA Theater. The soon-to-be concert performer expressed his nervous feelings, jubilation and some details on what people can look forward to his night of ballad and romance.

The actor was just a sit away , so this Glitter.Ph correspondent had a full view of him. Truly handsome in an Asian super model kind of way, with a strong jaw line, a face so pleasurable to look at. His eyes cannot deny his Chinese progeny and when he smiles, it becomes smaller. The timbre of his voice, educated, his manner of speaking, cosmopolitan and cultured, at times, seemingly cautious of his words.

“Feeling ko ngayon, a little high,” he guffawed. “I feel a little nervous, I will not deny it. The reality of it, ngayon lang nag-si-sink in. It’s a good kind of nervousness. though. I can say we have a show! Nabubuo na yung mga production numbers.”

“We have a lot of  ballads, romantic songs, and a couple of standards,” he went on. “There are dance numbers,  and the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra will be part of it, as well. Sobrang happy ko with my guests.”

He added, “This idea of having a concert was presented a year ago, before pa nagsimula ang Story of Us. When they presented it to me, I had no hesitations and grabbed it since I knew it would be a wonderful opportunity to showcase a different side of me.

“I am very hands on with regard to the repertoire. ‘Yung list of songs, may mga ideas ako and then ang Star Records, my director Alco Guerrero and Chino David from Solvent Sanctuary, we collaborated and weaved together the concert.”

13595893_10153885949423370_2139371604_nAccording to the crooner, he was definitely “out of my comfort zone with this concert.”

His explanation: “This is the first time that the audience will see me perform on stage as a solo artist. Of course, may guest artists ako and the numbers I will be doing with them eh yung not the usual. The concert will also have a lot of audience interaction. I want the concert to be experiential and memorable for my fans and supporters.  I’m giving them back the love they gave me. “

Adding more love to the concert, of course is his perennial TV and movie partner, Kim Chiu.

He said, “Yung sa amin ni Kim, expect the unexpected. The production number that we will do, we have not done it before. I took in the tweet suggestions kung ano ang dapat na maging number ni Kim. With what we will do, I assured to all of those who will get to watch, sure akong sasabihin niyong lahat na unforgettable yung number. Tiyak na matutuwa sila. “

After the concert, the worst comment Xian would expect to read from the public, especially from his bashers is the word “sablay.”

He explained. “Unang lumabas sa isip ko ang salitang yan, na sablay ako bilang singer.  Sa English kasi, di ba, why him? What’s wrong with him? Why did they pick him? I cannot find an English equivalent, the nearest that I can think of is that II am mediocre. Masakitkasinga I work hard para mag-improve as an artist tapos in one sweeping word, gusto nilang i-erode yung confidence mo and all the hard work na iniligay mo, parang balewala lang. You know, ngayon, I know better. I try to look at their bashing and all the hating from a different perspective, and I know these are reminders that I should not be complacent. Na you should always strive to be better.”

After the concert, Xian is set to do an album that would hopefully contain more original Filipino compositions.

With regard to movies or television, aside from working again with Kim, he hoped to have an opportunity to artistically collaborate with Sarah Geronimo, Anne Curtis, Arci Munoz and Coleen Garcia. He desired to be part of an action movie or a psychological thriller. He longed to be part of another independent film. His first and last was Two Funerals, a 2010 Cinemalaya film entry.

How about being a bold star? He laughed out loudly and said, “That might be too much.”

He shared, “I will not deny that though I am excited about doing this, there were days when I had doubts. After the taping of my soap, I got sick. When everything started falling into the right place, natapos namin ang line up, napasadahan na namin ang mga songs, ang gaan lang sa pakiramdam.  Tapos when we did the ticket selling and yung mga bumili, grabe ang words of encouragement nila, na kaya moyan, na manonood kami kasi we believe in you, ang sarap lang sa pakiramdam. Every rehearsal day is a new experience.Laging may bagong na-di-discover at natutuhan. This is something new for me. I don’t know what to expect when the concert happens, angalamkolang, it will be an enjoyable and memorable night na over flowing with love.”
