Francis Libiran Thoughts On Liz Uy, Pauleen Luna’s Wedding Gown and His Upcoming Marriage

By Kiko Escuadro

“On the positive side of the controversy, it created a buzz for a lot of inquiries.”

International acclaimed fashion designer Francis Libiran is back in the country and beaming with pride after he showcased his latest collection at the season finale of America’s Next Top Model Cycle 22. He was personally chosen by ANTM host Tyra Banks.

And to show his appreciation to his countrymen from their support, his creation was on display at the Fashion Exhibit held in Greenbelt 5 in Makati last weekend. The collection is the same designs he used during the photo shoot entitled “Creatures Of The Night” that was featured in Tyra Bank’s show.

According to Francis, “As a Filipino designer, I’m very proud of this, not only because na malaking  bagay ito to showcase Filipino talent, but also to all Filipino designers abroad.” This was the second time that Francis got a chance to work with international supermodel, Tyra Banks, but also shared his working experience again for ANTM.

“Nakakatuwa kasi ang coordination namin with ANTM should passed to Tyra Banks, so lahat ng mga sketches na pinadala ko is pinili niya talaga yun kaya nakakatuwa, kasi it’s a collaboration with my team talaga and Americas Next top Model,” he explained.

Francis was known for creating custom-made gowns for local celebrities. But a few months ago, his creation became so controversial because of Maine Mendoza’s (aka Yaya Dub) gown where she worn in kalyeserye’s “Tamang Panahon”. Francis explained, “Sometimes we should know and understand how fashion industry works, it’s a collection at hindi lahat ng bagay ay ginagawa for a particular person lang. So ‘yung collection na iyon binibili iyon, so ‘yung ginamit na iyon (Maine Mendoza) binibili iyon.”

Francis also said he is bashed by some followers. “Pero siyempre may maririnig ka na mga bashers at sasabihin na bakit mo pinasuot. But you know what, it’s hard to explain to them when they don’t understand,” stressed the designer.
He was also asked if he had a chance to talk to Liz Uy regarding the case she filed against a blogger (Fashion Police), “For me there’s a certain extent on how you can voice out your opinion, sometimes it’s below the belt already. So kung ikasisira ng isang tao why would you say it. Siyempre andun na tayo. Di ba dapat your opinion must be more constructive rather than panlalait, di ba?”

And what is his opinion about the said blogger? “Siyempre parang ano…para bang you look at what’s the motive? You look at the article. Kasi there’s a way of switching it and make it a positive note rather than make it parang panlalait ang dating. So if you are a really good writer or a blogger, you know how to twist things and making it you seemed you don’t hate the person or para bang your opinions are more constructive. So honestly, sana huwag mong i- down ang isang tao kasi pinaghirapan niya ang name niya rin to be established, and everyone of us ganun din. It’s just so sad na umabot sa ganito.”

Meanwhile, Francis shared on Instagram about his plan on getting married with his American partner, Christian Mark Jacobs. Although he didn’t want to elaborate on the details.

“Wala pang details,” he said. “You know, it’s hard to plan for yourself. I’ve been planning for so many brides and my clients but for yourself para bang nababalanko ka ganun pala yung feeling. Nakakagulat talaga pero syempre, hindi na din ako bumabata. I’m at age na din where in I have to settle down at one point. Siyempre I want a partner to be with me for the rest of my life.” The wedding date and location, they are still working on it.

For the meantime, Francis is in town and working for the much awaited wedding of Bossing Vic Sotto and Pauleen Luna. Although no details were divulged but all the soon-to-be-bride needed is a conservative design.
