Fatherhood is the main reason why rock band Kamikaze announced that they are going to slow down starting early next year. That will make the band inactive. How long? It’s indefinite!

We got a chance to interview Jay Contreras, frontman and vocalist of Kamikaze during a recording of a Christmas song for JB Music. And he reveals some reasons why the band needed a break including his health status.

Contreras said.

At the same time, Jay added that he need the break from singing due to health reason. He shared that he is scheduled to undergo medical operation January next year, to remove a cyst in his throat that has become a hindrance for his voice since July of this year. He clarified that it is not alarming and can be cured thru surgery.

“Nagtataka kami kasi before pagnama-maos ako, two to three days na pahinga bumabalik na ang boses ko. But last July, three weeks na wala kaming tugtog kasi di na bumabalik ang boses ko. So first time kung nagpa-check up after 10 years, dun may nakita na cyst sa vocal chords ko. Contreras added.

Jay also dismissed the rumor that he or other members of the band are leaving because they plan to go solo. It’s not an option for him or from any other members since the said issue was just a joke among themselves. And so far, he stressed that no one is contemplating to leave the group.

As of now, they are preparing for their finale concert on December 10 at the Araneta Colisuem called Ang Huling Sayaw, the title of the band’s last released single. He didn’t give any hint who will be the guests and what to expect, but he assured us that it will be a memorable one, especially to all their supporters.

Contreras also slammed people who are saying that Original Pilipino Music (OPM) is dead. Based on his observation, OPM is much better now. That Filipino artists nowadays are more universal, and they have the entire genre to display a distinct Pinoy style.

Contreras claimed.

Aside from raising his kids (he is married to former child star, Sarah Jane Abad , younger sister of Kaye Abad), Jay is also into photography, but with no specific subject. He just loves getting pictures, and fortunately he was given a chance to mount a solo exhibit last June at SM MOA, and he believed that this would be his passion while the band is on break.

Kamikaze was formed in 2000, with Jay on vocals, Jomal Linao and Led Tuyao on guitars, Puto Astete on bass and Bords Burdeos on drums. Among their hits are “Narda,” “Dobidobedo,” “Chiksilog,” “First Day High” and a lot more. Their latest Christmas song, a cover of “Feliz Navidad” is entirely for JB Music Carolling Champion contest, a promo video making contest for all music lovers. Kamikaze is a brand ambassadors of JB Music, a music store located nationwide.
