“Eventually, someone will take my place. I’m getting old and I cannot perform onstage all the time. All the members are passionate of their work, and I hope people will see them as theater artists, not just theater enthusiasts. Just like me, they all work hard for where they are now.” – Atty. Vince Tañada, PSF Artistic Director
In celebration of their 15th year as a theater company, the Philippine Stagers Foundation, headed by Atty. Vince Tañada, will be having a concert at the Araneta Coliseum on December 14, 3 p.m. Dubbed as PSF Live In Araneta Part 2, it will try to surpass the success of their last year’s anniversary show held in the same venue. According to Vince, last year more than 14,000 tickets were sold. But now, he confirmed that they have sold more than 18,000 tickets already. They have gone beyond the maximum capacity of the gargantuan venue.
Amidst their busy schedule (the group is now on tour for their musicale #POPEPULAR (Pa’no Kung Pinoy Si Kiko?), A Filipino Musical, they have time to rehearse for their much-awaited concert. As the artistic director of the group, Vince assures that it’s going to be a widely different show from the last year’s concert.
“No songs of last year will be included here,” said the director. “There will be a lot of new songs, like recent top hits (Billboard Top 30) are included in our repertoire. The show will feature the songs of the hit makers, here and the U.S. There will be around 14 production numbers with several solo spots from the members. We have a pretty lineup of songs that will surely make everyone have fun.”
At the rehearsals a few nights ago, we were treated with some of the featured songs. A medley of the Filipino classic rock band Hotdogs (Annie Batungbacal to Bongga ka Day), to the divas of today, like Regine Velasquez, Lea Salonga and Lani Misalucha. Of course, Taylor Swift will not be missed, and most especially the hits of Justin Bieber, One Direction, Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga. Boys will surely “Twerk Like It Miley” while the girls will “Roar” like Katy Perry. We just hope Adele’s “Hello” will find its way to the list.
“There will be no sitting arrangement,” Vince explained. ‘Whoever comes first will get a nice seat. This is solely an effort of PSF to thank everyone who have been supporting us through the years. And we assure you of a good show.” There will no set design, just the PSF onstage and their music.
Right now, the mobile theater group is in Cebu for the #popepular production to be staged at the Cebu Coliseum. They have a 3-day show in the city, with three performances a day. They started yesterday and will end on Monday. Upon their return, they will be having a series of shows at the SM North Edsa Cinema for the whole weekend. And after their BIG concert at the big dome, they will be traveling to Bicol for a series of shows of the same musical.
And early January, the group will start touring Mindanao, starting from Misamis Occidental (Oroquieta City to Ozamis), up to Pagadian, Iligan and Cagayan de Oro City. The hope to end their sounthern leg in Butuan City. As of today, #POPEPULAR has mounted more than 300 performances. They hope to duplicate, or if not surpass, the success of their production of Bonifacio, The Musical staged two years ago. It ended with more the 400 shows.
