Celebrating Flores de Mayo is always fun!

Tuesdays With Edwin By Edwin Uy

It’s May and the season of Flores de Mayo and Santacruzan. This is a yearly tradition usually organized by the Catholic Church to honor the Virgin Mary. This is a ceremony where we parade the most beautiful sagalas in our place and is partnered by their most handsome escorts. And what makes it more delightful is that these sagalas wear beautiful gowns usually created by eager designers.

Here in my place in Mandaluyong, we have so many Santacruzans celebrated in different barangays. The Abalos girls and ladies, being one of the most beautiful in our city are usually invited to be one of the Reyna Elena in Santacruzans. I am honored to usually dress them up in these events. The most recent is when I dressed Corrine, the daughter of Mayor Abalos, who looked so lovely in my blue gown.

One of the most prestigious Flores de Mayo events which is held yearly is the MOA (Mall of Asia) Flores de Mayo. It is usually participated by top models and celebrities wearing creations of some top designers of the country. Every year, there is a theme that is followed and this year, the theme was “Renaissance”. The FDAP (Fashion Designers Association of the Philippines) was able to participate and some of the new members of the group were able to join for the 1st time in this very exclusive affair. There were 30 designers who joined, including top designers like Renee Salud and Danilo Franco. The participants paraded around MOA vicinity and ended up at the mall’s concert ground (activity area). The event is not just a regular Flores de Mayo parade but also a competition among the participating designers as their creation were adjudged by credible panel of judges. Four titles were awarded and all the winners happened to be members of the FDAP and three of them were 1st timers in this yearly competition.

Vince Sityar who was given the special title “Magandang Pilipina” award with her model Miss Earth Air 2012 Stephany Stefanowitz. Louie Pangilinan won the title “Reina de las Flores” (3r place) with his model Miss World Peace- Philippines 2015 Jeslyn Santos. Chico Estiva won the title “La Flor de Manila” (2nd place) with his model Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International 2016 Leren Mae Bautista. Rholand Roxas won the title “Rosa Mistica” (1st place) with his model Joyce Ann Ricio.

Congratulations to all the winners and congratulations also to the FDAP group. FDAP continues to grow. We are recruiting more new members who can give prestige and honor to association. FDAP happens to be the country’s oldest existing group of fashion designers.
